Khayr Pulad Khan

Khayr Pulad Khan

Born: Unknown Died: c. 1364 Reigned: 1362 - 1364 Khanate: Golden Horde (Great Disorder) Title: Khan

Overview

Khayr Pulad Khan was a Shibanid prince who held the Golden Horde throne for approximately two years during the Great Disorder, making his tenure slightly longer than most of the ephemeral rulers of this chaotic period. He operated in the eastern portions of the Golden Horde's territories, in competition with Mamai's western faction and with other Jochid claimants who controlled different regions. His reign ended when he was expelled from power by factional rivals, after which he disappears from the historical record.

The Shibanid branch, to which Khayr Pulad belonged, drew its territorial base from the western Siberian and Ural steppe region, giving it a geographic and political orientation distinct from the Sarai-centered Batu line and the Mamai-dominated western territories. During the Great Disorder, this Shibanid base provided enough military resources to sustain challenges to other claimants, though never sufficient to reunify the Golden Horde as a whole.

Khayr Pulad was the father or close relative of several other claimants who would appear in subsequent years — including Aziz Shaykh Khan, Il Beg Khan, and Hasan Beg Khan — suggesting that this particular Shibanid family cluster was especially active in pursuing the supreme title across multiple generations during the disorder.

Rise to Power

Khayr Pulad came to power around 1362 in the eastern Golden Horde territories, establishing himself as a rival to Mamai's western puppet khans. His Shibanid lineage gave him Chinggisid credentials, and his territorial base in the Ural-Siberian region provided some military foundation for his claim.

Rule and Achievements

  • Held the Golden Horde throne in the eastern territories for approximately two years
  • Maintained a rival power center to Mamai's western dominion, demonstrating that the Great Disorder was not simply a single succession conflict but a fragmentation of the Golden Horde into multiple competing zones
  • Was expelled from power around 1364 and subsequently killed

The existence of competing khans holding different regions simultaneously during the Great Disorder is well illustrated by Khayr Pulad's tenure, which overlapped with the reigns of Mamai-backed claimants in the west.

Legacy

Khayr Pulad Khan is notable primarily as a representative of the Shibanid family's sustained engagement with the contest for the supreme khan title during the Great Disorder. His relatives would continue to press claims across the following decade, demonstrating the depth of Shibanid ambition during this period. None of them succeeded in unifying the Golden Horde, but their persistent challenges contributed to the prolonged fragmentation that weakened the state so severely that Tokhtamysh's eventual reunification required years of sustained military effort.
