Khizr Khoja Khan

Khizr Khoja Khan

Born: Unknown Died: c. 1399 Reigned: 1389-1399 Khanate: Moghulistan Title: Khan of Moghulistan

Overview

Khizr Khoja Khan was the Khan of Moghulistan who restored Chingisid authority over the khanate following the chaotic interregnum under the usurper Qamar ud-Din. He rescued Moghulistan from a generation of disorder and re-established a functioning Chingisid government, making him one of the most significant rulers in the khanate's history. He also navigated the complex relationship with Timur, who was by this period the dominant power in Central Asia, managing to preserve Moghulistan's independence through a combination of diplomacy and strategic marriage alliances.

Rise to Power

After Ilyas Khoja's murder in 1368, the usurper Qamar ud-Din controlled Moghulistan for approximately two decades. He was not a Chingisid and his rule was therefore regarded as illegitimate by the Moghul nobility. Around 1389, Khizr Khoja successfully overthrew Qamar ud-Din and reclaimed the Moghulistan throne for the legitimate Chingisid line.

The support of the Moghul aristocracy for a genuine Chingisid ruler - as opposed to the usurper Qamar ud-Din - was the foundation of Khizr Khoja's return to legitimate rule.

Rule and Achievements

Khizr Khoja's decade of rule restored Moghulistan as a functioning state:

  • He expelled Qamar ud-Din and restored Chingisid governance after twenty years of usurpation
  • He managed relations with Timur diplomatically, avoiding direct confrontation with the conqueror who dominated the western steppes and Transoxiana
  • He concluded a significant political settlement with Timur, reportedly giving his daughter in marriage to Timur as part of a peace arrangement
  • He continued the Islamization of Moghulistan that his ancestor Tughlugh Timur had begun
  • He maintained the khanate's administrative functions over the eastern Chagatai territories
  • He died around 1399, leaving the throne in better condition than he found it

Legacy

Khizr Khoja Khan is remembered as the restorer of legitimate Chingisid rule in Moghulistan after the disruption of Qamar ud-Din's usurpation. His successful navigation of the relationship with Timur - the most powerful ruler in the world at the time of his reign - demonstrated considerable diplomatic skill. The khanate he restored would continue for another two and a half centuries. His descendants would rule Moghulistan through its long twilight, maintaining the Chingisid tradition in the eastern Chagatai lands long after the western territories had been absorbed into Timur's empire.
