Orug Temur Khan Gulichi

Örüg Temür Khan (Gulichi)

Born: Unknown Died: 1408 Reigned: 1402 - 1408 Khanate: Northern Yuan Dynasty Title: Great Khan

Overview

Örüg Temür Khan, also known by the name Gulichi, was a ruler of the Northern Yuan Dynasty whose accession marked a significant moment in the struggle between Oirat and eastern Mongol factions for control of the Great Khan title. He was an Oirat-backed candidate elevated to the khanship by the powerful Oirat leader Bahamu, representing the growing dominance of the western Oirat confederation over Mongol imperial politics during this period.

His reign illustrates the degree to which the Great Khan had become a political instrument wielded by powerful military commanders rather than an independent sovereign. Despite holding the supreme title, Örüg Temür Khan's actual authority was constrained by the Oirat patrons who had placed him in power.

Rise to Power

Örüg Temür Khan came to power in 1402 with the direct support of the Oirat leader Bahamu, who sought a compliant Genghisid figurehead through whom Oirat interests could be advanced. His elevation represented a victory for the Oirat faction in the ongoing struggle against eastern Mongol candidates backed by commanders like Arugtai. His accession was contested, as eastern Mongol factions refused to recognize an Oirat-backed khan as legitimate.

Rule and Achievements

  • Served as Great Khan under Oirat sponsorship, with real power residing with Bahamu and the Oirat leadership
  • His reign represented the peak of early Oirat influence over the nominal Mongol imperial succession
  • Was unable to reunify the eastern and western Mongol factions under a single authority, as his Oirat associations made him unacceptable to eastern Mongol commanders
  • Faced ongoing military opposition from Arugtai-backed eastern Mongol forces throughout his reign
  • Was eventually defeated and removed from power by Öljei Temür Khan, who had the backing of eastern Mongol factions

Legacy

Örüg Temür Khan was defeated and killed in 1408 by Öljei Temür Khan's forces, ending the first major phase of direct Oirat control over the Great Khan title. His reign demonstrated both the power the Oirat confederation had accumulated and the limits of that power — they could install a khan but could not compel the eastern Mongols to accept him. The pattern of competing Oirat-backed and eastern Mongol-backed khans would continue for decades, culminating in Esen Taishi's dramatic seizure of the Great Khan title in 1453.
