Ashina Helu was the last independent khagan of the western Türks. Once a Tang commander, he rebelled in 651, reunited the Ten Arrows and took the title Ishbara Qaghan. In 657 the Tang general Su Dingfang defeated him on the Irtysh, and the western Türk lands came under Tang control.

Rise to Power

A grandson of Bagha Shad, Helu had submitted to the Tang and served as a commander. After Taizong's death in 649 he rebelled, overthrew Irbis Seguy and proclaimed himself khagan around 651.

Rule and Achievements

  • United the Dulu and Nushibi tribes and raided the Tang protectorates
  • Was defeated by Su Dingfang at the Irtysh River in 657

Legacy

Helu fled toward Tashkent, was captured and sent to Chang'an; he was pardoned and died there around 659. The Tang divided the western Türks between protégé khagans, and their independence ended.
