Khazar Khaganate

Overview

Baghatur is the Khazar qaghan named in the Arabic accounts of the 750s and 760s. Baghatur, 'hero', was also a steppe title, so it may not be his personal name.

Rise to Power

Nothing is recorded of how he came to power.

Rule and Achievements

  • Accepted a marriage alliance proposed by the caliph al-Mansur around 759: his daughter married Yazid al-Sulami, governor of Armenia, with a large dowry and escort
  • When his daughter and her two children died about two years later, suspected that she had been poisoned
  • Sent the tarkhan Ras on raids south of the Caucasus in 762–764, which devastated Albania, Armenia and Iberia, took Tbilisi and destroyed an Arab army

Legacy

The raids were the last great Khazar invasion of the Caucasus. His later life is not recorded, and his place among the Khazar qaghans after the conversion is not known.
