Overview

Buyan Sechen Khan was Great Khan of the Northern Yuan from 1592 to 1604. He was the son and successor of Tümen Jasagtu Khan and the grandfather of Ligdan Khan, the last Great Khan to rule in his own right. He held the senior title of the Genghisid house at a time when real power lay with the regional princes, and his authority over the Mongol clans was largely nominal.

Rise to Power

Buyan was born in 1556 into the Chahar line descended from Dayan Khan. He succeeded his father, Tümen Jasagtu Khan, in 1592. His father had given the Great Khan's office new weight with a law code and the adoption of Tibetan Buddhism, but the princes of the Tümed, the Ordos and the Khalkha now held their own lands, armies and titles.

Rule and Achievements

The record of his reign is thin. What the sources preserve is telling:

  • The other clans recognised him as Great Khan of all the Mongols, but mostly in name
  • To strengthen his claim, he is said to have shown the clans what was believed to be the seal of Genghis Khan
  • Later chronicles remember him as a ruler who governed according to justice and religion

Legacy

Buyan Sechen Khan died in 1604 and was succeeded by his grandson Ligdan. His reign shows the gap that had opened between title and power: the Great Khan still carried the dynasty's legitimacy, but he could no longer command the princes who held the armies. Ligdan's attempt to close that gap by force would end the Northern Yuan three decades later.
