Göktürk Khaganate (Eastern, under Tang rule)

Overview

Ashina Hubo, of a minor branch of the Ashina, was the last Eastern Türk to rule as an independent qaghan before the Second Khaganate. From his base near the Altai he raided the Xueyantuo, and after their fall in 646 he made the Yenisei Kyrgyz and Karluks his subjects.

Rise to Power

After the capture of Illig in 630 he fled north rather than submit to the Xueyantuo, and later took the title Yizhuchebi Qaghan.

Rule and Achievements

  • Raided the Xueyantuo from the Altai
  • Subdued the Kyrgyz and Karluks after 646
  • Refused to come to the Tang court in 647, and Tang envoys sent to him were killed

Legacy

In 649–650 the Tang general Gao Kan attacked him with Uyghur help. His vassals deserted, and he was captured in 650. Emperor Gaozong spared him and gave him a general's title; his lands were divided into Tang commanderies.
