Hasan Beg Khan

Hasan Beg Khan

Born: Unknown Died: c. 1369 Reigned: 1368 - 1369 Khanate: Golden Horde (Great Disorder) Title: Khan

Overview

Hasan Beg Khan was a brother of Khayr Pulad Khan and another member of the Shibanid family that had been persistently pressing claims to the Golden Horde throne throughout the Great Disorder. His brief reign in 1368 to 1369 followed immediately after Uljay Timur Khan's displacement and represented the Shibanid faction's renewed attempt to assert control after a brief period of Astrakhan-backed competition. He was expelled and likely killed shortly after taking power.

The Shibanid family's repeated returns to the contest for the supreme title are a notable feature of the Great Disorder. Where many claimants appear once and vanish, the Shibanid princes of this particular generation — Khidr, Murad, Khayr Pulad, Aziz Shaykh, and now Hasan Beg — formed a continuous chain of related rulers pressing the same family's claims across nearly a decade of chaos. This persistence implies the Shibanid territorial base in the Ural-western Siberian region provided sufficient resources to repeatedly reenter the contest despite repeated failures.

Hasan Beg's expulsion and likely death brought this particular wave of Shibanid claims to an end, at least temporarily. The family would not disappear from Mongol history — Shibanid descendants eventually founded the Uzbek Khanate in the fifteenth century — but their intensive campaign for the supreme Golden Horde title faded after Hasan Beg.

Rise to Power

Hasan Beg came to power around 1368, capitalizing on the displacement of Uljay Timur Khan. His Shibanid lineage and family connections to previous claimants provided him with both legitimacy and some degree of pre-existing military support from Shibanid networks.

Rule and Achievements

  • Held the Golden Horde throne briefly in 1368 to 1369
  • Represented the final major wave of Shibanid challenges for the supreme title during the Great Disorder
  • Was expelled from power and likely killed within approximately a year of his accession

Legacy

Hasan Beg Khan is the last of the Shibanid cluster to press a serious claim to the Golden Horde throne during the Great Disorder period. His failed reign, following those of his relatives and predecessors, marked the exhaustion of Shibanid ambitions at the supreme level during this particular era. The family's territorial base in Siberia and the Urals would sustain its political existence, but the dreams of Shibanid khans at Sarai were effectively over after Hasan Beg. It was left to Tokhtamysh — a Tuqa-Timurid backed by Tamerlane — to finally end the Great Disorder.
