Overview

Kailuo is the Yaonian qaghan the Liao History calls Hula Qaghan. Historians identify him with Li Kailuo, whom the Tang set up as leader of the Khitans in 746 to replace the rebel Zuwu. The record of his reign is thin.

Rise to Power

He was installed after Zuwu's revolt of 745.

Rule and Achievements

  • Ruled in the years of An Lushan's campaigns against the Khitans; in 751 the Khitans routed An Lushan's army of about 60,000 near the Huang River
  • After An Lushan's rebellion of 755 weakened the Tang, the Khitans came under the overlordship of the Uyghur Khaganate

Legacy

Which Yaonian qaghan led the Khitans in the wars of 746–755 is disputed, since the Liao History places Zuwu in them. His death is not recorded; the year 778 for the end of his reign is a modern estimate. Su Qaghan followed him.
