Overview

Kormisosh is listed in the Nominalia as a khan of the Vokil clan who ruled for seventeen years, the first ruler not of the Dulo clan. Most chronologies place him after Sevar, in the 750s, when Constantine V began building fortresses on the Bulgarian border.

Rise to Power

He came to the throne after Sevar, ending the rule of the Dulo clan.

Rule and Achievements

  • Demanded tribute for the new Byzantine forts in Thrace, according to Theophanes, and raided as far as the Long Walls of Constantinople when it was refused
  • Faced Constantine V's first campaigns against Bulgaria

Legacy

The dates of his reign differ widely between chronologies, and many historians think he is the same man as Kormesiy, placed earlier in some sources. His son-in-law Sabin later became khan.
