Avar Khaganate

Overview

Kuver was a leader in the Avar Khaganate known from the Miracles of Saint Demetrius. The qaghan placed him over the Sermesianoi, the descendants of Roman captives settled near Sirmium. Around 680 he led them in revolt and took them south to the plain near Thessalonica.

Rise to Power

He was appointed by the Avar qaghan. Many historians identify him with Kuber, a son of the Bulgar ruler Kubrat, though this is not certain.

Rule and Achievements

  • Defeated the Avar army sent after him
  • Settled his people in the Keramisian plain in Macedonia
  • Plotted to seize Thessalonica, a plan that failed

Legacy

Nothing is known of Kuver after the failed plot. His revolt shows how the khaganate ruled mixed groups of captives, Slavs and Bulgars through appointed leaders.
