Overview
Malamir, Omurtag's youngest son, ruled for five years. His inscriptions, like his father's, call him kanasubigi; much of the government was in the hands of his chief minister, the kavkhan Isbul.
Rise to Power
He succeeded his father in 831, although he had two elder brothers.
Rule and Achievements
- Had his elder brother Enravota, who had become a Christian, put to death; the Bulgarian church later honoured Enravota as its first martyr
- Took Byzantine towns in Thrace, including Philippopolis, after the peace of 815 broke down
Legacy
He died in 836. His successor Presian was probably his nephew.
