Overview

Orda, Jochi's first-born son, founded the left wing of the Jochid ulus, the lands east of the Volga between the Ural river and Lake Balkhash. Though the elder, he accepted his brother Batu as head of the whole ulus, and his line ruled the eastern half under Batu's line for more than a century.

Rise to Power

On Jochi's death he and Batu divided their father's people; Orda took the eastern half, which Persian and Uzbek sources call the White Horde and Russian ones the Blue Horde.

Rule and Achievements

  • Took part in the western campaign of 1236–1242; his forces raided Poland as a diversion, sacked Sandomierz and Kraków in April 1241, and defeated Henry the Pious at Legnica
  • Was sent by the great khan Güyük, with Möngke, to look into Temüge Otchigin's attempt on the throne

Legacy

He died in 1251. His son Qun-Quran succeeded him, and his descendants held the left wing until the 1340s.
