Overview
Qasim, son of Ulugh Muhammad, the founder of the Kazan Khanate, became the first ruler of a Chinggisid khanate inside Muscovy. The town of Gorodets Meshchyorsky on the Oka, granted to him in 1452, took his name as Kasimov.
Rise to Power
He fought with his father's army at Suzdal in 1445, where the Tatars captured Grand Prince Vasily II, and was then sent to Moscow with his brother Yaqub. After his father's death and his brother Mahmud's accession in Kazan, he stayed in Vasily's service.
Rule and Achievements
- Received from Vasily II in 1452 a hereditary domain in the Ryazan borderlands, centred on Gorodets Meshchyorsky
- Fought for Moscow against Moscow's rivals and against Tatar raiders, including the horde of the rival khan Sayyid Ahmad in 1449
- Was Moscow's candidate for the throne of Kazan in the war of 1467–1469, which failed
Legacy
He died in 1469 and was succeeded by his son Daniyal. The khanate he founded lasted until 1681 as a Muscovite vassal and a place where Moscow kept Chinggisid princes it might use.
