Overview
Qutula, a son of Qabul Khan, was the last khan of the Khamag Mongol. The Secret History remembers him for his strength and for the feast at his election, when the Mongols danced around a tree at Qorqonaq Jubur.
Rise to Power
After Ambaqai's death the Mongol clans gathered at Qorqonaq Jubur on the Onon and raised Qutula as khan to lead the war of revenge.
Rule and Achievements
- Fought thirteen battles against the Tatars, with his nephew Yesügei among his commanders
- Did not win a lasting victory; the feud with the Tatars and the Jin continued
Legacy
After his death no khan was chosen, and the confederation broke up into rival clans. Yesügei, his nephew, led the Kiyat but never held the title. Temüjin, Yesügei's son, revived the khanship in 1189 and as Genghis Khan in 1206 built an empire on it. Dates for the three Khamag Mongol khans are approximate; the Secret History gives their order but no years, and modern estimates differ.
