Overview

Ashina Shibobi, known as Tuli (Tolis) Qaghan, was a son of Shibi Qaghan who ruled the eastern wing of the Türk realm as a lesser qaghan under his uncle Illig. Defeats and quarrels with Illig drove him to the Tang, and his defection helped bring about the fall of the first eastern khaganate.

Rise to Power

He held the rank of shad under Chuluo Qaghan and was made lesser qaghan of the east by Illig.

Rule and Achievements

  • Joined Illig's raids on Tang China in the 620s
  • Failed to put down the revolt of the Xi in 628 and was beaten by the Tiele leader Yaoluoge Pusa
  • Was flogged and imprisoned by Illig, then appealed to the Tang and submitted to them in 629

Legacy

Tuli served the Tang as a general and died in 631 on his way to Chang'an. His son Ashina Heluohu succeeded to his following.
