Overview
Erdenebulgan is the soum that holds Tsetserleg city, the centre of Arkhangai aimag, on the northeastern slopes of the Khangai mountains at about 1,690 metres. It should not be confused with Tsetserleg soum in the north of the aimag.
The town grew around the Zayain Gegeen Monastery, built by the first Khalkha Zaya Pandita, Luvsanperenlei (1642–1715), whose temples date from the early 1680s. Since 1947 they have housed the Museum of Arkhangai Province.
Tsetserleg has a milder climate than much of Mongolia, with cooler summers and warmer winters; in January it is often the warmest place in the country. Most rain falls in July.
