Overview

Sevrei soum holds Khongoryn Els, the great dune field of the southern Gobi, inside Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park.

The dunes cover more than 965 km², running some 6 to 12 km wide and about 100 km long, with some accounts giving up to 180 km. They rise to around 80 metres. They are known as the Singing Sands for the sound they make when wind moves the sand or when it slides down the slopes.

What to See

  • Khongoryn Els and the climb to the dune crests
  • The "singing" of the sands on windy days
  • Desert wildlife of Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park

Visiting

  • The dunes lie about 180 km from Dalanzadgad over desert tracks; travel is by four-wheel drive van with a driver.
  • Ger camps near the dunes make an overnight stay possible; summer days are hot, so climb early or late.
