Arpa Keun

Arpa Ke'un

Born: Unknown Died: 1336 Reigned: 1335-1336 Khanate: Ilkhanate (fragmentation) Title: Ilkhan

Overview

Arpa Ke'un was the first of the puppet rulers who claimed the Ilkhan title following Abu Sa'id's death without heirs in 1335. He was a descendant of Ariq Böke — Kublai Khan's rival for the Great Khanship — rather than of the Hulagu line, which immediately made his claim controversial. He was installed by powerful Mongol commanders who needed a nominal Chingisid figurehead to legitimize their own authority. His reign lasted barely a year before he was killed in battle, the first episode of the violent fragmentation that would destroy the Ilkhanate within a generation.

Rise to Power

When Abu Sa'id died without heirs in November 1335, the powerful Mongol commanders of the Ilkhanate scrambled to install a candidate who would serve their interests. Arpa Ke'un was selected by the commander Ali Padshah and elevated to the Ilkhan title despite his tenuous legitimacy. His Ariq Böke lineage was technically Chingisid but from a rival branch, and he had no particular connection to the Ilkhanid tradition.

Rule and Achievements

Arpa Ke'un's brief reign was defined entirely by factional conflict:

  • He was a puppet of Ali Padshah rather than an independent ruler with any genuine authority
  • He faced immediate challenges from other commanders who had installed their own preferred candidates in other parts of the former Ilkhanate
  • He killed Öljeitü's wife Sati Beg's husband, beginning a chain of court violence
  • He was defeated in battle and killed in 1336 by forces supporting Muhammad Khan, another pretender

His reign produced no administrative acts or policies of any significance.

Legacy

Arpa Ke'un's brief tenure marks the beginning of the Ilkhanate's terminal collapse. The succession of phantom rulers who followed Abu Sa'id's death were not rulers in any meaningful sense — they were legitimizing symbols for competing military commanders, installed and discarded as the factional balance shifted. Arpa Ke'un's rapid end set the pattern for the two decades of chaos that followed before the Ilkhanate's last pretenders disappeared entirely around 1357.
