Overview

Kormesiy is the name given to the Bulgarian ruler between Tervel and Sevar. The Byzantine chronicler Theophanes names a Bulgarian ruler Kormesios in connection with the treaty of 716, and a Madara inscription mentions a Kormisos. The Nominalia line for these years is damaged, so his place in the succession is uncertain.

Rise to Power

He followed Tervel, possibly after a short reign by another khan. An older reading of the Nominalia gave the name of this ruler as 'Tvirem', but that word is now read as part of the Bulgar calendar date.

Rule and Achievements

  • Ruled at peace with Byzantium under the treaty of 716
  • Is named on one of the Madara inscriptions, which mention payments from Byzantium

Legacy

The record of his reign is thin. Many historians think Kormesiy and the Kormisosh of the Nominalia are one ruler placed at different points in different sources; some Bulgarian scholars count two.
