Overview
Muhammad, son of Sulayman, ruled the Western Khanate as Arslan Khan for almost three decades under the Seljuk sultan Sanjar, whose sister he married. His reign was the Western Khanate's last long period of stability, and the minaret he built still dominates Bukhara.
Rise to Power
Sanjar installed him in 1102 after defeating Jibra'il Qadir Khan.
Rule and Achievements
- Built the Kalyan Minaret in Bukhara, completed in 1127
- In his later years, weakened by illness, shared power with his son Nasr, who was murdered in a plot
- Quarrelled with Sanjar, who marched on Samarkand and took it in 1130
Legacy
Sanjar deposed him in 1130, and he died soon afterwards. The Kalyan Minaret, about 46 metres high, survived the Mongol conquest and is the symbol of Bukhara today.
