Overview
Pang Tegin was a Uyghur prince who, after the Kyrgyz sacked Ordu-Baliq in 840, led fifteen clans west towards the Karluks and the Tarim basin. In 857 the Tang emperor Xuanzong recognised him as qaghan with the title Huaijian Qaghan.
Rise to Power
He emerged as a leader of the western Uyghurs in the years after 840, while Wujie and Enian led the groups on the Chinese frontier.
Rule and Achievements
- Gathered Uyghur groups around Yanqi and the eastern Tarim basin
- Received the qaghan title and a Tang embassy in 857
Legacy
When he died is not recorded. Historians link him to the Uyghur states that followed at Qocho (Turfan) and Ganzhou, but how is debated. The rulers of Qocho later used the title idiqut rather than qaghan.
