Overview
Sher Muhammad was Khan of Moghulistan from 1421 to 1425, ruling between the two reigns of his kinsman and rival Uwais Khan. He was a son of Muhammad Khan and a contemporary of the Timurid ruler Shah Rukh. Sources differ on whether Uwais was his nephew or his cousin.
Rise to Power
Sher Muhammad took the throne in 1421, displacing Uwais. Uwais left his court and became a raider in the Lop and Kuruktag deserts, backed by a Timurid governor whose daughter he had married.
Rule and Achievements
His reign was shaped by the feud with Uwais:
- The two fought repeatedly, and Sher Muhammad usually won
- In one night raid Uwais's men attacked his camp; Sher Muhammad escaped by hiding in a ditch
Legacy
Sher Muhammad died of natural causes in 1425, and Uwais succeeded him. His reign is an example of the family rivalries that kept Moghulistan's khans fighting each other while the Timurids and the Oirats pressed on its borders.
