Sultan Mahmud, son of Soyurghatmish, was the last Chagatayid khan in Transoxiana. Unlike his father, he took the field in Timur's campaigns.

Rise to Power

Timur raised him in 1388 on his father's death and married his widowed mother.

Rule and Achievements

  • Coins were struck in his name during Timur's lifetime
  • Married Timur's granddaughter Sa'adat Sultan; his daughter married Ulugh Beg
  • Commanded troops in Timur's western campaigns; Timurid histories say he captured Bayezid I at the battle of Ankara in July 1402

Legacy

He died in Anatolia in 1402 or early 1403. Timur appointed no successor, and the line of Chagatayid khans in Transoxiana ended with him.
