Overview
Tserendorj held the title Jasagh khoshoi chin van Sain Noyon from 1817 to 1853, ruling the central Khalkha aimag through the first half of the nineteenth century. His tenure fell in the decades when the Qing dynasty began to weaken, and when Chinese merchant firms became an increasingly heavy economic presence in Mongolia. Sources record little of his own acts.
Rise to Power
He succeeded Puntsagdash in 1817.
Rule and Achievements
- Held the Sain Noyon princely title for thirty-six years, from 1817 to 1853
- Governed during the early decline of the Qing dynasty, including the Opium War era in China
- Ruled under the Qing system of hereditary princes, banners and imperial oversight
Legacy
Tserendorj's long tenure belongs to the quiet, administrative century of Qing Mongolia. The pressures building in those decades, from debt to Chinese trading houses to resentment of Qing officials, shaped the generation that would declare independence in 1911.
