Overview
Mörön has been the centre of Khövsgöl aimag since 1933, when it took over from Khatgal. It is named after the Delger Mörön river.
The town grew from Möröngiin Khüree, a monastery founded in 1809–11 on the river bank. By the early 20th century it had about 1,300 lamas; it was destroyed in 1937. A small new monastery, Danzadarjaa Khiid, was built in the 1990s.
Winters are long, dry and frigid and summers short and warm, with about 240 mm of rain and snow a year.
