Overview

Because it lies so close to the capital, it is where most visitors first experience the Mongolian countryside.

Highlights

  • Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, with Turtle Rock and forested valleys
  • Khustai National Park, home of reintroduced takhi (Przewalski's horses)
  • Manzushir Monastery ruins on the southern side of Bogd Khan Uul
  • The giant equestrian statue of Genghis Khan at Tsonjin Boldog

When to Go

June to September for hiking and riding; winter visits to Terelj are possible for the hardy.

Soums

Töv has 27 soums. Fuller guides to individual soums are in preparation.
