Overview

Zuunmod, "A Hundred Trees", lies about 43 km south of Ulaanbaatar on the south side of Bogd Khan Mountain, at 1,530 metres. It became the centre of Töv aimag in 1942; before then the aimag was run from Ulaanbaatar.

The ruins of Manzushir Monastery, founded in 1733 and destroyed in 1937, stand about 5 km northeast of the town on the slopes of the mountain, much of which lies in the Bogd Khan Uul Strictly Protected Area.

The climate is dry and cold: July is the warmest month and January the coldest, with about 276 mm of rain and snow a year.

What to See

  • Manzushir Monastery, its museum and the hillside ruins, a short drive from town
  • Forest walks on the southern slopes of Bogd Khan Mountain

Visiting

  • About an hour by road from Ulaanbaatar, so an easy day trip.
  • Summer is the best season for walking; winters are long and very cold.
