Overview

Geleng, chief of the Qibi tribe of the Tiele, was proclaimed Yiwuzhenmohe Qaghan in 605, after the Western Türk khagan Heshana attacked the Tiele. He led the first Tiele qaghanate, based near Turfan.

Rise to Power

The Tiele tribes raised him after breaking with the Western Türks.

Rule and Achievements

  • Led the Tiele qaghanate that controlled the Turfan section of the Silk Road
  • Ruled with the Xueyantuo leader as his lesser qaghan

Legacy

When Sheguy (Shikui) took the Western Türk throne around 610, Geleng gave up the qaghan title and rejoined the Western Türks. The Qibi later served the Tang; the general Qibi Heli was of his house.
